Here are five engineering considerations that lead to clever design features you’ll only notice if they’re missing.
Large industrial crates aren't always easy to unpack. Heavy lids can be awkward to remove, panels can get lost - and for clients, spending time removing dozens of screws isn't exactly time well spent.
It's why we often incorporate these features:
Twist-locks replace traditional screws, allowing crate lids and access panels to be opened quickly without tools while still keeping the packaging secure during transport.
Large crate lids can be fitted with lifting rings so they can be safely removed using lifting equipment.
Ring bolts can also be installed inside the crate, allowing components to be securely strapped into position during transport.
Some large crate hoods require additional structural support during lifting.
In these applications, metal L brackets and D-rings reinforce the crate while providing secure lifting points, helping operators remove large hoods safely and confidently.
Again, it's a small design feature that makes a big difference when handling oversized packaging.
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most effective.
A hinged lid or ramp stays attached to the crate, making opening easier while preventing lids from becoming damaged, misplaced or separated from the packaging.
Even the strongest crate can't protect a product if it moves inside.
That's why many of our designs include engineered restraint systems built around the component itself.
These can include:
Ideal for wooden platforms and open cradles, ratchet straps securely hold components in position throughout transport.
Mounted directly to the platform or crate, tie-down points provide additional restraint for particularly valuable or heavy equipment.
Where heavy components are involved, reinforced carriage bolts and structural hardware ensure internal supports remain securely fixed throughout transport.
The result is greater stability, reduced movement and better protection from departure to destination.
Not every product needs heavy-duty restraints.
For smaller or more delicate components, we can incorporate Velcro loops directly into custom foam inserts. This keeps products securely positioned inside the foam, even if the crate is accidentally tipped or inverted during handling.
Not every component is vulnerable because it's fragile.
Sometimes the biggest risk is scratching a painted or precision-machined surface.
That's why we often line wooden cradles and supports with:
These materials cushion the contact points while maintaining the structural support needed for safe transportation.
Sometimes it's these small details that prevent expensive cosmetic damage.
Good packaging should make life easier long after delivery.
Depending on the application, we can incorporate features such as:
Helping operators reposition crates safely by hand.
Allowing large crates to be easily moved around production facilities, warehouses or trade show floors without additional lifting equipment.
Some custom designs even allow the transport crate to become part of the customer's workflow, with removable crate tops and wheeled bases that continue to support the product after delivery.
Sometimes the smartest feature isn't a feature at all, it's choosing a completely different packaging solution.
For instance, a fully enclosed wooden crate isn't always the best solution.
For larger equipment, custom wooden platforms can provide excellent support while making loading, unloading and installation much easier.
Instead of enclosing the product completely, platforms use engineered wooden supports positioned exactly where they're needed.
Those supports can then be lined with felt, rubber or foam to protect painted surfaces while integrated tie-down hardware keeps the product securely in place.
Where additional protection from dust or debris is required, a cardboard sleeve and tray (lid) can be added to create a hybrid solution.
