CHIPBOARD

Chipboard is a smooth surface board, engineered from low-density fiberboard. It is available in a variety of thicknesses and commonly used in thinner, more flexible grades for boxes and trays, and in thicker, more rigid grades for layer pads on pallets, or partitions in heavy duty cartons.

PRODUCT DETAIL

Chipboard is available in varying calibers (thicknesses), for example as thin as a cereal box, or as thick as a carton designed to hold a lightweight piece of furniture.

  • Chipboard is commonly used in health & beauty and food industries, as its smooth material characteristic provides food grade hygiene standard. 
  • Untreated chipboard is porous and best used in moisture free environments, to avoid swelling which may affect the chipboard performance. Lined chipboard is recommended for applications where moisture may be present.
  • Chipboard is environmentally friendly as it has a large percentage of recycled material content, including wood waste.

Solid Bleach Sulfite (SBS) 

Solid bleach sulfite (SBS), is similar to chipboard, but with a white surface. It is available in a variety of thicknesses (calibers), with different coatings for different purposes. SBS material provides an enhanced print quality compared with chipboard, and is generally clay coated, providing a higher level of protection against moisture. It is therefore often used for medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and frozen food applications.

Chipboard V Corrugated Cardboard

  • Chipboard is just one smooth, solid layer, meaning it is more space saving than corrugated cardboard, which has two smooth layers with a rippled fluting layer in between. It also weighs less than cardboard, keeping shipping costs to a minimum.
  • Chipboard cartons are commonly used for light weight products, when a high level of presentation is required. They offer a smoother, cleaner appearance to corrugated cardboard boxes, and are often printed with multiple colours displaying content details and instructions.  Corrugated cardboard cartons are commonly used for more industrial packaging, with superior stacking strength, they securely hold heavier items. Print on these cartons cannot incorporate as many colours, and is usually much less detailed than chipboard cartons.
  • Chipboard material is smooth and solid, offering higher hygiene standards than corrugated cardboard, as the fluting can allow for dust or dirt particles to accumulate.
